Siaya: Man Commits Suicide Over A Domestic Dispute

Residents of Kadenge sub-location in Alego Usonga constituency awoke to shock on Sunday morning after the body of a 35-year-old man was discovered hanging from a mango tree in Udura village.

The deceased, identified as Nicholas Otieno, popularly known as Abanko, is believed to have died by suicide following a domestic dispute involving dowry cattle paid for his elder sister.

According to Kadenge Assistant Chief Jacob Ouma, the family reported the incident shortly after 3:00 a.m. Preliminary accounts suggest that Otieno had demanded full control of the dowry animals, while his mother allegedly offered to give him only one calf. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a quarrel.

Otieno is said to have left home at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. His body was discovered several hours later by youths returning from a funeral vigil, who immediately raised the alarm and informed the family.

Chief Ouma confirmed that the dowry had been settled during a ceremony held the previous day, and that Otieno had insisted on receiving at least two cows.

Police officers later visited the scene and moved the body to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination is expected to be conducted. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
