Siaya: 32-Year-Old Woman Mauled by Crocodile While Fetching Water from Lake Victoria

A 32-year-old woman tragically lost her life after being attacked by a crocodile while fetching water from Lake Victoria at Kopiata beach in Siaya County.

The woman, identified as Elizabeth Akinyi Oketch, tragically lost her life while fetching water at the beach along the shores of Lake Victoria on Sunday January 5, 2025.

Confirming the incident, acting Assistant Chief Esau Oduru reported that the woman was accompanied by her daughter and had filled four out of the six jerrycans when the crocodile attacked her.

Oduru mentioned that the crocodile attacked the woman and threw her into the water while her daughter looked on in horror.

Although the daughter was unharmed, she raised the alarm, prompting nearby members of the public to rush to the beach, but their attempts to save her mother were unsuccessful.

The administrator stated that, with the help of local fishermen, members of the public were able to recover the body from the lake.

Additionally Oduru mentioned that the severely mutilated body was subsequently taken to the mortuary at Madiany sub-county hospital for a postmortem examination.
