Probe As Fisherman Found Dead At Dunga Beach in Kisumu

A 37-year-old fisherman who went missing two days ago has been found dead at Ringiti Island in Suba North constituency.

Bernard Obonyo went missing on Tuesday before his body was found in Lake Victoria waters on Thursday afternoon.

His colleagues said they suspect Obonyo was murdered by unknown people before his body was dumped in the lake waters.

The fisherman’s body had visible injuries like deep cuts on the neck and his hands.

Ringiti Island beach management unit treasurer Daniel Sure said they spotted the body when it was floating in the lake.

"It was spotted by some fishermen who went to bathe at the lake shore. They informed security officers about the incident," Sure said.

“Some fishermen who went to bathe discovered Obonyo’s body after we had been searching for the body for two days. We suspect he was murdered because his body had some injuries."

Speaking on Thursday over the matter, the BMU officer said Obonyo was last seen when he left his house to go for a fishing expedition in the lake.

He said they have been looking for their colleague since then.

“We were worried by his absence since he went fishing. It is unfortunate that he is dead,” he said.

The body was removed from the lake by a group of fishermen.

Homa Bay county police commander Samson Kinne said they are undertaking investigations to enable them to know the people behind the death of the fisherman.

“Investigations are ongoing into the cause of death. We are asking residents with information about those who killed Obonyo to report to him,” Kinne said.

The officer asked fishermen to remain vigilant and report cases of attacks when they are operating in the lake.

“We also want them to report colleagues who operate illegal businesses in the lake,” he said.

The fisherman’s body was moved to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
