
Nyamira: 6-year-old dies, family members nursing stomachaches after eating poisonous cassava

Police officers at Ekerenyo station, Nyamira County are investigating an incident where a 6-year-old boy died while five family members (parents and brothers) were left with stomach aches after allegedly eating poisonous cassava.
According to a police report, the victims of the family which include the parents and four children aged 16, 12, 8 and 6 years had eaten the food for lunch. When the night came, they began experiencing stomach aches, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Their neighbours took them to Ekerenyo Hospital, where they received first aid treatment before being transferred to Nyamira General Hospital for more medical attention.
In Nyamira Hospital Shadrack Mosigisi, the youngest child succumbed to complications.
The parents and one child were treated and discharged, while another child was in critical condition following the effects of the poison.
Police officers visited the family home where they took samples of the cooked and uncooked cassava for more investigations.
