Kiambu: Animal Offal Dumping Worries Lovers Of Mutura, Meat

The recent dumping of waste from freshly slaughtered animals near an estate in Juja, Kiambu County, has left residents worried.

It is suspected that a slaughterhouse may have dumped the offal at an open field near Oasis estate along Gatundu road.

Residents woke to the ugly scene, and endured bad stench for days as dogs scavenged on the waste.

The field has been turned into a waste-yard, but the offal troubled the locals as they feared if it continues, crooked mutura, food and meat dealers may pick it and sell to unsuspecting customers.

“They were ferried at night by a Tuk Tuk. We suspect the source is a slaughterhouse nearby. If they continue dumping those matumbo our health will be compromised” Anthony Mwaura, a resident lamented.

Onesmus Mutemi who has encountered people hawking meat in streets of Juja suspects they sell this waste.

“A guy tried to sell meat to me along the road. I dismissed him. What kind of meat is hawked on streets? People have to be careful what they are buying especially from street food vendors here,” he said.

Anne Kaburu feared that if the county government and the National Environment Management Authority fail to act fast, the abattoir operators will dump elsewhere and people will unknowingly consume it.

“At this time life is hard, what will stop some mutura sellers and butchery operators from picking it from the dumpsite, cleaning and then selling to customers?” Anne posed.
