Sadness has engulfed the Kanjuku village in Gatundu North, Kiambu county, after two students last evening died in a tragic motorbike accident.
The lives of the two teenagers ended tragically following the accident that occurred on the Mang'u-Flyover road in Kiambu, and involved another motorbike and one vehicle.
The deceased were identified as Francis Muiruri 17 and his cousin Jane Mugure also aged 17 years, and were pillion passengers.
Francis was a Form Four student at Kanjuku secondary school – while his cousin Jane was a Form Three student in the same school. The two died just hours before resuming their studies as schools were set to reopen on Monday 13.
The tragedy has left the family feeling distraught after losing two young people who had a whole life ahead of them. Photo/Courtesy.
According to the family, the two were heading back home after visiting Kariminu (ii) dam when a motorbike they had boarded was hit from behind by another motorbike.
Police said that the impact sent them rolling on the tarmac, before smashing into a vehicle.
The incident occurred at the Mubau wa Kanyoni, at night. The rider who hit them is said to have melted into the night, never to be seen, leaving the three young people injured.
Brian Mburu -- also a Form Four student – and who was riding the ill-fated motorbike sustained injuries.
“I must have fainted following the accident – and when I came to – I saw my two cousins lying on the tarmac, bleeding unconscious,” said Brian – noting that he immediately called his grandfather asking for help.
“Jane looked very bad. Muiruri on the other hand was calling out God's name,” added Brian.
The incident has left the family feeling distraught after losing two young people who had a bright future ahead.
According to the family – the two injured youngsters were rushed to Mubau health Centre in Kiambu – but there was no one to attend to them.
“Upon arriving at the Igegania Level Four hospital, the security guard refused to open the gate for us, and so we rushed to Thika Level Five, but it was already too late,” said the brother Joe Mwaura.
“These young people would probably have been saved if the two facilities we rushed them to had been operational,” said Mwaura.
The family is pleading with the Kiambu county leadership to streamline services at the facilities to help save lives in future.
Residents also want speed bumps and proper signage erected on the road to avert future tragedy.
The two bodies are currently lying at the General Kago morgue.
The motorbike and the vehicle were taken to the police station.
