Dennis Ombachi thrills netizens with ugali cabbage recipe

Popular content creator Dennis Ombachi has kept his promise of sharing with his Kenyan fans the perfect recipe for the notorious 'Njaanuary' month.

Before the year ended, Ombachi promised to prepare an ugali cabbage meal for fans as they ushered in the New Year and resorted to ditching meats for vegetables.

While sharing on his social media pages, the self-taught chef took fans through his short 'Cabbage and Ugali Mayai' preparation process, much to everyone's thrill.

He wrote: "As promised here’s Cabbage & Ugali Mayai for Njaanuary making its 1st of many appearances."

"I don’t use tomatoes on my cabbage just a personal preference but feel free to use them. Also there are many ways to cook your eggs this is how my mum made them to feed many mouths at once."

As usual, the chef hit a local supermarket to buy several items necessary for his version of the popular - but frowned upon - meal.

He also took time to remind fans that he wasn't the biggest tomato in cabbages fan while also adding that his mother used the same process he had used - although she would add more water into the eggs to feed her large brood.

"I just don’t like the taste of tomatoes in my cabbages of spices however feel free to add flavor in your if you so wish just don’t overcook!" he said.

"On really really tough days, my mum used the same process I have used, however she would dilute the eggs with water before adding them in, more portions less flavor but I am glad those days are behind us now."

Keen to go ensure that everyone sails through Njaanuary just fine, the award-winning digital creator also dropped a few tips on how to perfectly prepare eggs to avoid the eventual taste of raw spices.

"If you are going to use spices in your eggs, don’t whisk them in with the eggs you will be tasting raw spices in the eggs, I prefer cooking them in with the tomatoes and onions then pouring in the egg and let them cook to infuse," he wrote.

Over the years, Kenyans have made fun of how survival instincts seem to kick in on the first month of the year - after several festive weeks of intense indulgence, debauchery and unregulated meat intake.

Many Kenyans, broke and battered, now resort to eating cabbages since it has proven to be one of the most affordable and easily accessible meal items in the Kenyan markets.

CNN journalist Larry Madowo, was, however, unimpressed with Ombachi's cabbage crusade.

While reacting to Ombachi's tweet, a displeased Madowo said, "Resist this attempt to rehabilitate cabbage. It’s garbage!"
