Media personality Willis Raburu has shared some of the challenges he went through for being overweight. One of those is not being able to fit on a toilet seat.
At the time he was 165kgs. Sharing a TBT photo of himself, Raburu recalled the pain body shaming caused him.
"Funny pic right? Yeah, I’m seated on a toilet seat in an airplane. You see it’s the little things. Once upon a time I was 165kg and I could barely fit on an airplane seat let alone use the loo. It was an embarrassing time. Coupled with body shaming veiled as jokes both online and offline it hit hard. Nowadays I don’t take things like this likely, I’m still on a journey plagued sometimes at 115kg but surely not where I used to be."
Raburu says this is a journey he is proud to take as it makes him a better person adding he had tried different measures to lose the weight to no avail.
"I thank @nairobibariatric and still continue to urge insurance companies to allow people to go through these services. I’m not ashamed of it all because I know how it felt, I know my struggles, I know my pain and I have tried it all. No matter what you choose to do to get fit and lose weight, so long as it’s legal and has a degree of safety and proper scientific backing, go for it. Your body is your biggest investment. I’m rooting for you and I’m proud of your efforts, keep moving. Successful people look like you."
In the past Raburu admitted to being an emotional eater. Sharing his experience he stated he would eat 6 to 8 chapos in ine sitting.
“By the time I was going for the surgery, I was not doing well…I was 164kg. My pressure was high, my cholesterol was high,” he said.
According to Raburu, one needs between Sh600,000 and Sh900,000 to have the surgery done locally. After the surgery, patients must also be willing to make permanent changes to their lifestyle.
“I used to eat 6 to 8 chapatis or up to 8 pieces of fried chicken at a go but now I don’t think I can do one and a half chapatis,” he said.
