Selena Gomez Opens Up About Vaping Nicotine And How It Changed Her Voice

Selena Gomez has opened up about her past nicotine vaping habit, saying she believes it has permanently changed her voice as she encouraged others to avoid the habit.

The singer and actress shared the revelation in a video posted on her Instagram Stories on Sunday, October 18, 2026, in which she spoke about the difficulty of quitting nicotine. “I’m not gonna be able to change my voice,” Gomez said, explaining that she had vaped nicotine frequently.

She admitted that giving up the habit had not been easy, warning people who vape or are considering starting that the experience was not worth it. “Nicotine is so hard to quit,” she said.

“I think I just wanted to say if you’re going through it, or if you’re even trying to vape, it’s just not worth it. It’s so stupid,” Selena added.

Gomez says she has stopped vaping

Gomez also addressed comments about changes in her voice, acknowledging that some listeners might have noticed a difference. “It’s changed my voice,” she said, adding that people who did not enjoy listening to her voice were free to stop listening.

Despite the difficulty of quitting, the 34-year-old said she was happy to have stopped vaping and hoped to maintain the progress she had made. “I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope we can keep it up. It’s really hard,” she said.

She also encouraged people facing similar struggles to remain hopeful, saying that they could overcome their own challenges. “I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too,” she added.

Her comments offer a personal explanation for a change in her voice that fans have discussed previously. However, Gomez did not share medical details confirming the precise cause of the change.

Previous comments about her voice

In December 2025, Gomez addressed questions about her voice during an Instagram Live session, when she said her throat sometimes swelled internally. “I don’t really care. I think my point is that things happen,” she said at the time.

She added that her throat sometimes swelled on the inside, without identifying vaping as the cause during that conversation.

Gomez had previously spoken about the effects of medication used to manage lupus and bipolar disorder. Her latest comments provide additional context about her experience, although she has not publicly explained whether other factors have also contributed to the changes in her voice.

Gomez embraces getting older

The singer has also spoken positively about the changes that come with ageing, saying she is comfortable with the process. Speaking during an interview on September 16, 2026, Gomez said she was not afraid of getting older and had enjoyed the experience. “I don’t feel like it’s a bad thing. Getting older has been so fun. I’m not scared at all. I love getting older,” she said.

She added that physical changes were part of life and that being alive mattered more than worrying about them.
