Village elders held a cleansing ritual at the home of the late Brian Chira just weeks after his burial.
The elders dressed in traditional attire gathered at the entrance of his grandma's home.
The village elders began the ceremony with prayers as they asked God for forgiveness over what transpired on the day Chira was laid to rest.
They said that on that day they witnessed things that are taboo in their culture. They held banners condemning the LGBTQ community and some of the activities they witnessed as well as the use of illicit brew.
While at it, they prayed for the youth and asked for forgiveness on their behalf.
Chira tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run accident in Karuri, Kiambu County. A friend who was with him explained that Chira had been to a local club and had had too much to drink.
Brian Chira was laid to rest on his grandmother’s ancestral land in Gitei village, Gathanje, Kiambu County on March 26.
The burial ceremony drew a crowd of prominent figures from the content creating community, known as the “Chira Clan,” and left the villagers astonished.
Villagers and even family members stood back, allowing them to bury their friend without fully understanding what was happening.
Local residents expressed their dismay at the lack of respect for village customs and the disruptive behavior exhibited by the mourners.
“We didn’t like the way they dressed, smoked and drank alcohol in front of us. They didn’t even respect the clergy. They were disrespecting our Kikuyu traditions, and we’ve never seen that before."
After the burial, the villagers said they were going to hold a cleansing ceremony to remove any negative spirits left behind.
