Universal Music Group starts removing their artists catalog from TikTok, cites greed over artists interests

TikTok has issued a robust response to Universal Music Group (UMG), accusing the music giant of prioritising greed over the welfare of its artists and songwriters.
The statement comes in the wake of UMG’s decision to walk away from TikTok, citing concerns over compensation, AI-generated content, and online safety.
TikTok expressed deep disappointment in UMG’s actions, stating that despite the false narrative presented by UMG, the platform has been a powerful force in promoting and discovering talent, boasting well over a billion users.
TikTok highlighted its ‘artist-first’ agreements with every other label and publisher, emphasising that UMG’s departure is not in the best interests of artists, songwriters, and fans.
The dispute escalated with the release of an open letter by UMG on January 30, 2024, titled “Why We Must Call Time Out on TikTok.”
The letter outlined UMG’s core mission of supporting artists and songwriters in achieving their creative and commercial potential, raising concerns about compensation, AI-related issues, and online safety on TikTok.
UMG accused TikTok of proposing significantly lower payment rates compared to other major social platforms, with TikTok accounting for only about 1% of UMG’s total revenue.
The music giant expressed dissatisfaction with TikTok’s handling of AI-generated content, claiming it could dilute the royalty pool for human artists.
Furthermore, UMG criticised TikTok’s inadequate efforts in addressing copyright infringement and content-related issues.
Tensions peaked as TikTok allegedly attempted to strong-arm UMG into accepting an unfavorable deal by selectively removing music from certain developing artists.
UMG rejected TikTok’s tactics, vowing to fight for fair compensation and stand against the undervaluation of music.
TikTok responded defiantly, accusing UMG of intimidation and threats and asserting its commitment to artists, songwriters, and the creative value of music.
The platform acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasised its responsibility to secure an agreement that appropriately compensates artists, prioritizes human creativity, ensures a safe environment, and promotes effective moderation.
The music industry now watches closely as this clash between TikTok and Universal Music Group unfolds, with potential implications for artists, fans, and the broader landscape of digital music platforms.
