Perpetual Kimaro is the viral Mama Fua who provides services to Nairobi residents living along Thika Rd.
She is proud to be referred to as Mama Fua. Speaking to YouTuber Nicholas Kioko on Thursday, January 9, the young Kenyan opened up about her journey looking for work.
Perpetual Kimaro is 25 years old and is a mother of one.
"Kazi mmeskia, mimi ni mama Fua. "
On her popular tiktok channel, she is called Perps.
How did she begin this job?
"This is something- a job- I have been doing for one year now. Sikuwa najulikana mbeleni but it got to a point I went viral on tiktok, that is where people got to know me," she shared about her humble beginnings.
"Of course, it is hardship that prompted me to begin this job."
She was pushed into it because as a young Gen Z mother, she wanted to provide a roof over the head for her child, plus a warm meal. Also, Perpetual faced huge medical bills as a result of a condition her child faced.
"I'm a mother, yes, and due to that condition, my child has, I found myself unable to be admitted to the hospital often I was jobless, then again I was also not living with my parents. You see if you are in your parents' house, sometimes you find you can provide for your child, and you are there, I saw it fit to find a solution "
She wanted to try her luck looking for work in Thika.
"I asked them to be looking after my child, as I go look for work in Thika"
The long and hard search for work took almost a month,
"I was hosted by my friend in Thika, God bless them so much, I looked for work for one month, yet back home, my parents assumed I was already working."
The sickness facing her child was weighing heavy on her mind as she job-hunted.
"My child underwent a scan one day, a whole-body scan, and it was discovered that the child was suffering from hernia.
Explaining how challenging this is "The medical doctors told us that this condition can't be treated with medical, that the only option was to undergo surgery"
For the operation, she was referred to the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.
"So that left me stressed wondering where I would get the money to pay for that operation, I was jobless, I didn't have friends who could afford to contribute money for this operation, I was stranded and didn't know where to start"
Her dilemma also included other things;
"That day my mum had asked me to send 500 bob to rush the child to the hospital. I had a friend who suggested I wash clothes for her, coz I had gone to borrow that money, but they suggested I do this, " she was able to send the much-needed cash.
That quick money was all she needed to start her journey as a mama fua.
"This work, I saw that if on the minimum I can make 500 shillings every day, it can really help pay the bills." Her journey began in Witeithie, with two customers a day.
She was highly encouraged and motivated to push herself to work even harder.
"I decided to share my work content on tiktok, and now most of my clients are referred from tiktok. Thank you very much. I saw potential from Muthaiga all the way to Thika. It started all because of my child. I am a single mum, I had to find a way out of being jobless at the time"
That was a smart move according to Perps, who saw a massive jump in demand for washing services. She remains focused and determined amid job shaming from sections of society.
"It's actually there they talk and judge, but I don't care as long as I can take care of my child"
She charges s800 per laundry basket, duvets are sh400, while house cleaning is determined by size.
"It's a cleaning and laundry service. Sometimes we get jobs at malls, as well, "
Her business has expanded which has seen her become an employer.
"For now, I have hired several girls, I have seven of them, "
She loves that she has created jobs for other people.
"They reached out to me via DM, and I said I also started there, why not? Actually, they are all single mothers. We are pushing ourselves.
