Tanzanian parliamentarians have proposed a motion to help contribute to former MP, Joseph Haule alias Professor Jay to get on his feet since his battle with kidney disease.
The motion to finance Prof Jay’s was proposed by the Nkasi North MP Aida Kenani and Geita Village MP Joseph Musukuma. The lawmakers proposed a donation of Sh50,000 which will aid in his treatment.
The musician-turned-politician was hospitalized at the Taifa Muhimbili Hospital in January 2022, in critical condition with his family calling for the public to help raise funds for medical bills that had risen to the tune of Sh4 million per week.
Though President Samia Suluhu settled his bill, Prof Jay still eyes on starting a foundation that will help Tanzanians with kidney diseases and cannot afford the high expenses that come with treatment.
During an interview with Clouds TV, Prof Jay recalled that there was one specific injection that cost Sh300,000 and he would be injected in the morning and evening. “I took ten injections in one week, totaling fifty million. That’s just the injection cost; in addition, kidney cleaning (dialysis), starts at one hundred eighty thousand for a patient at Muhimbili. If you’re an outpatient, it’s three hundred fifty thousand. That’s per session, and you need to undergo it up to four times a week, depending on your condition,” he said.
Earlier on, Prof Jay disclosed that the root cause of his health struggles started from liver-related issues. He described the moment when the situation took a dire turn, rendering him incapable of breathing, leading to his admission to the intensive care unit.
“Although diseases are said to be lessons, people do die a lot. Finding yourself in the ICU and surviving for 127 days is no small matter,” he said.
