South African musician Tyla was announced as Best New Artist at the 2024 BET Awards on Monday.
Her debut song, 'Water', gained international fame and several awards, including the first-ever Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024
At 22 years old, she became the youngest artist in Africa to receive a Grammy.
Accepting the Best New Artist award, she triumphed over African competitors such as Ayra Starr, 4Batz, Bossman Dlow, Fridayy, October London, and Sexyy Red.
In her acceptance speech, Tyla said, "This is a great honor to be here. I would like to dedicate this award to Africa.
"I would also like to dedicate this award to all the African stars who came before me and did not have the opportunities that I have. This is amazing. Africa to the world, my friends."
She also won the Best International Artist award, surpassing stars Asake, Ayra Starr, Aya Nakamura (France), and artists from various parts of the world.
Her double victory affirmed her position as a rising star in African and international music.
Additionally, Burna Boy, Tems, and Seyi Vibes received nominations in categories yet to be awarded at the event, showcasing the presence and recognition of African talent at the prestigious occasion.
