Musician Kambua pays tribute to Nelson Mandela's granddaughter Zoleka Mandela

Gospel minister Kambua is mourning the death of South African author, activist, and grandchild to Nelson Mandela and Winnie Mandela. 

Zoleka succumbed to metastatic cancer on Monday. Kambua described Zoleka as a sister she had never met and spoke highly about the late's book.

"This one has hurt me to my core. I’m here grieving the loss of a woman I never even met! @zolekamandela what a bright light. I read her book years ago and she became my sister (in my head?). Rest well mama. You ran your race so bravely. Peace and comfort to your family. ? #terminallyfree."

According to a statement put up by the Mandela family, she died surrounded by her family.

“On Monday, September 18th, Zoleka Mandela was admitted into hospital for ongoing treatment for metastatic cancer to the hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain and spinal cord," read part of the statement.

"Recent scans revealed significant disease progression including fibrosis in the lungs as well as several emboli.”

The Nelson Mandela Foundation also extended its heartfelt condolences.

"We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba and a friend of the Foundation. When her inspiring memoir When Hope Whispers was published she graciously signed copies for all our staff and ran a leadership session for the staff around the book.Zoleka was a tireless activist for healthcare and justice. Her work in raising awareness about cancer prevention and her unwavering commitment to breaking down the stigma surrounding the disease will continue to inspire us all.Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this most difficult time. Hamba kahle Zoleka, we will remember you."

She had written about her addictions, her daughter's death, and her own battles with breast cancer.
