Mike Sonko refutes claims of abandoning Conjestina Achieng'

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has refuted claims that he abandoned troubled boxing star Conjestina Achieng' days after sports personality Carol Radull visited her at her village home.

On Friday, via his social media pages, the former city boss leaked phone call conversations with Conjestina's family, disclosing how she left his team after a misunderstanding.

According to Sonko, despite doing his best, his efforts to help rehabilitate the former boxing champ were thwarted by Conjestina's own family.

To back up his assertions, Mike Sonko leaked a phone call conversation that he had with Congestina's son, Charlton Otieno, whom he referred to as a 'very good buddy' whom he 'respects a lot'.

In the phone call, a frustrated Sonko reprimanded the Conjestina family accusing them of watering down his efforts to help the troubled boxer.

"I cannot be doing Congestina's work all the time, and the Kenyans I am helping are so many. You should also play your part as a family. When she goes home, you let her go back to smoking. It is expensive. This process is very expensive," he said.

Further, a frustrated Sonko was pained while narrating how he now had to start afresh in helping the legendary boxer by, once again, taking her back to rehab.

"It is wasting my money and time, and it is not right. I did my best. The treatment is expensive, and paying doctors is also equally very expensive. This is embarrassing, and it looks like PR that I keep doing and abandoning," he is heard saying.

For instance, the boxer was upset after Sonko failed to secure her a plane ticket from Mombasa to Nairobi as flights were fully booked.

Away from the phone call conversations, Sonko let his thoughts own in a lengthy diatribe online, disheartened that, even after having the best intentions, some people still accused him of playing theatrics and PR gimmicks when it came to Conjestina.

"I have seen a post by my good friend Carol Radul on Conjee, which attracted both positive and negative reactions from the public. Others were criticising and accusing me of playing PR and vipindiree," he wrote.

"Kenyans, I did my best to help Conjee, but her family watered down my efforts. Fortunately, my heart is bigger than myself. At times, I fail to control it for the love I have for the people, especially the less fortunate, and I think this is the reason I initially gave Conjee the first, second, and now maybe I will be forced to give a third and final chance.

"I'm always serious with all the cases we undertake since we always document and account for the progress of all our sensitive cases."

Sonko's clarification came days after media personality and sports guru Carol Radull updated Kenyans on the current state of the former boxer, adding that she had gone back to the 'same lifestyle'.

Radull also said that, despite overwhelming help and support from numerous quarters, it had still proved difficult to successfully rehabilitate Conjestina.

"On 2nd Jan I visited my friend Congestina Achieng in her shags in Yala. She's been there about 2 months and is back to her same lifestyle. She has good days and bad days. When I arrived she was having a bad day but her face lit up when she saw me and we chatted for a long time as best we could. I tried with my layman's ability to gently encourage her to "clean up her act". Many have tried to help her but none of us have succeeded in a long-term solution to her predicament," Radull said.

While still harbouring love in her heart, Radull encouraged Kenyans to keep visiting the disgraced boxer and, when they can, encourage her to quit her destructive lifestyle.

"I concede it's out of my capability What I can do though is be her friend. Visit her when I can. Call her Mum from time to time to check in on them. If you are ever in the Yala area; drop in and say hey," she wrote.

Additionally, while agreeing with Sonko's online sentiments, Radull acknowledged that the flashy politician did the best he could.

"This man did all he could to help my friend Congestina Achieng," she wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
