MC Jessy reveals reason that led him to joining politics

Veteran actor, and comedian turned politician MC Jessy born Jasper Muthomi has revealed 3 of the main reasons that pushed him to join politics arguing the financial perks wasn't one of them.

According to the 41-year-old former Churchill Show stand up comedian him running for a parliamentary seat was a bid to help his home village as well as creatives in the entertainment industry as he had a better understanding of all the challenges they faced, being one of them.

"The reason I went into politics is, of course, to solve the problems of the people of South Imenti. Several schools in Imenti need a face lift. I thought this was a job I could do very well if I became an MP. The other issue was security, but the third reason that motivated me most to enter politics was legislation.” MC Jessy during a candid sit down with Grammy award winning songwriter, music producer and singer Bien Alusa.

Jessy's remarks were in defence after Bien questioned his ambitious political aspirations noting running for a government seat did not paint a good picture of the celebrated top comedian. The Sauti Sol band member pointed out Kenyans are always weary of those in politics as over the years its been proved greedy people join the avenue in a bid to enrich themselves and protect their businesses.

Arguing his case further the 41-year-old stated, “Having been in the industry for a long time, and with the insight I had gained, I had become aware of problems we face as creatives that are never addressed.

I wanted to go to Parliament and introduce a Creative Economy Bill, which is structured in a very simple way by having a legal framework for how the creative economy will work. By framework, I mean having a permanent secretary, a creative secretary, a creative director, a creative economy council, and a creative fund,”

Noting as it stands there isn’t a legal framework that addresses the needs of Kenyan creatives.

Alusa however didn't seem convinced by the selfless act voicing one can't mingle with pigs and still come out of the pen clean. According to the Sol Generation manager all Jessy had pointed out could still actively be achieved without him joining the dirty game through methods such as lobbying.

“Jessy, everything you said can still be achieved without you being an MP. You can still lobby. All I’m trying to say is that I feel like if you want to be a politician, politics wins and not the creative industry.

You are better off on this side of the creative industry. An artist can make a change without necessarily being involved in politics. You cannot mingle with pigs and not end up being tainted by mad,” the 'Wahalla' hitmaker stated.
