KRA seizes illicit goods worth Sh5.7billion in major crackdown

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has intercepted illicit goods valued at Sh5.766 billion in a major operation aimed at curbing illegal trade.

Between July 2021 and June 2024, the KRA targeted 15,848 non-compliant taxpayers through stringent measures, underscoring its commitment to protecting national revenue and maintaining market integrity.

The taxman says that to strengthen border security, it has set a dedicated border security unit that monitors cargo and human movement to prevent tax evasion and address security threats.

"The integration of advanced technology such as cargo scanners, K9 units, and marine boats has significantly bolstered KRA’s capability to intercept and address illicit trade, including in Kenyan waters," read a statement by KRA.

According to KRA, Illicit trade, has been a threat to revenue collection and national security, also poses risks to the economy and public health.

In the review period, KRA's multi-departmental approach included enhanced market surveillance and efforts to counter smuggling, commercial fraud, and other threats.

Key initiatives included a dedicated border security unit, participation in local security committees, and the use of advanced technology such as cargo scanners, K9 units, and marine patrols.

Between 2021 and 2024, KRA established additional Rapid Response Units in Marsabit, Garissa, and other strategic locations, while setting up Inland Border Control Checkpoints in areas like Archers Post and Kisian.

K9 units were also deployed at key airports and border posts, further boosting detection capabilities.

During this period, KRA conducted 28,851 border patrols, resulting in 1,215 interventions and the seizure of over 100,000 counterfeit products, including cigarettes and ethanol.

"These efforts reflect KRA's commitment to combating illicit trade and ensuring fair business practices."

"We are determined to uphold fairness and legality in trade, protecting Kenya’s borders and securing the nation’s economic interests," KRA said in a statement.

The taxman continues to collaborate with a multi-agency task force to create a level playing field for traders and ensure compliance with the law.
