Sauti Sol producer and vocalist Savara Mudigi is giving a special coterie their flowers when they still can smell them.
Mudigi is specifically grateful to the ‘corporate babes’ for aiding the musical group to transform into international stars.
Reminiscing how Sauti Sol rose to fame and fortune, Mudigi says the lady bosses in the Kenyan corporate world played a very crucial role in their success especially after the boys’ band released one of their hit songs titled Nishike.
Whereas Mudigi admits release of Sura Yako was the song that made Sauti Sol a household name, Nishike a song termed obscene by the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) and even banned thereafter, was the record that propelled them to greater heights, especially in the corporate world.
“After Sura Yako we hit the gym seriously for Nishike to experiment. It was a different sound, and style which elicited a lot of reaction. And despite few moral people tried to cancel us corporate gigs increased,” Mudigi reveals.
The shows kept coming thick and fast and Sauti Sol had never been that busy.
“Nishike took us to a whole new level, we did a lot of end-year corporate performances. At some point, it was almost mandatory that whenever we performed in these gigs we had to perform Nishike. You could hear decision-makers instructing those who handled us to make sure we took off our shirts when performing. Taking off our shirts especially became like a deliverable for us to get a show. We know these were decisions by the corporate babes in charge and we want to say thank you so much for supporting us. They made us a fortune. Walitujenga sana,”
Mudigi confesses that Sauti Sol made lots of millions of shillings from these deals which he thinks wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the lady bosses.
