Garsen and Galole MPs rescued after a 10-hour ordeal on Tana river

Garsen MP Ali Wario Guyo and his Galole counterpart Hiribae Buya were rescued at around 3 a.m. following a 10-hour-long ordeal on Tana River.

The duo, who were part of an 18-team relief food distribution exercise, reportedly went missing on the waters of the Tana River aboard a private boat.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, Tana River County Commissioner Hassan Mohammed confirmed that all the missing persons were rescued and were safe.

"We have stayed alert the entire night to ensure that everyone who was on that boat," said Mohammed adding that the 16 others included 2 MCAs and one child.

He further thanked all parties involved in the rescue exercise and responded immediately to the emergency, including Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki and Defence CS Aden Duale.

"I would thank everyone who was involved in this rescue mission particularly the Red Cross who had sent the first boat and they even got lost four times but luckily they found the missing persons," he added.

Teary MP Guyo attempted to express his sentiments but was overcome with emotions.

CS Kindiki, in an earlier statement, announced that a multi-agency search and rescue team spearheaded by the Kenya Coast Guard had been dispatched for the rescue mission overnight.

The MPs and their aides were part of a food distribution exercise for flood victims when they got lost in the river while tracing their way to Garsen.

A video that has since gone viral captured legislators appealing for help after the incident, which comes in the wake of heavy rains that continue to pound several parts of the country.

The team, which was running rescue missions after the Tana River broke its banks, is believed to have gone missing after losing contact with the flanking team.
