Former Shinyalu Member of Parliament Daniel Liula Khamasi has died.

Khamasi's death was confirmed by Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, who revealed in a statement on Tuesday, December 30, that the former lawmaker passed away in a hospital. 

The governor, however did not reveal the exact cause of the former MP's death as he mourned Khamasi as a dedicated public servant who was keen on ensuring the welfare of his people and Kakamega County at large.

"Hon. Khamasi was a dedicated public servant whose contribution to the development of Shinyalu and Kakamega County will be remembered," Brasa said.

"On behalf of the people of Kakamega County, I convey my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the people of Shinyalu. May his soul rest in eternal peace," he added.

 The former MP served as the MP for Shinyalu for 10 years before stepping down in 2007. The MP was 79 years old at the time of his death.

Khamasi's first stint in parliament came in 1997 when he was elected under a FORD-Kenya ticket. He went on to retain the Shinyalu seat in 2002 under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) political vehicle. 

In the 2007 General elections, the MP was dethroned by Charles Lugano Lilechi of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

The former lawmaker also served as a temporary deputy speaker from time to time in the National Assembly during his parliamentary tenure.

Khamasi's death comes just two days after Porro Ward Member of the County Assembly Patrick Lerte passed on at the Maralal Referral Hospital.

Samburu clerk of the National Assembly, Fred Lenapeer, confirmed that the MCA died on the morning of Sunday, December 28.

Preliminary reports indicate the MCA was taken ill in the days leading up to his death, and was receiving treatment up until he succumbed.

Earlier in December, the Western Kenya bloc was plunged into mourning again after the Kenya Kwanza Alliance's nominated Member of Parliament, Denar Joseph Hamisi, passed away aged 56.
