CS Chirchir Cites Bitumen Shortages Behind Rironi–Mau Summit Road Delays
In a post on X following an inspection of the ongoing works, Chirchir said difficulties obtaining bitumen over the past two months had affected construction progress.
“Bitumen availability has been a challenge in the last 2 months due to the current geopolitical issues and supply chain disruptions; this has caused some setbacks and unexpected delays,” he said.
The CS acknowledged the disruption caused by the works, saying the government was working to accelerate construction.
“We recognize the inconvenience motorists and businesses continue to endure and appreciate their patience as we work to deliver this transformative project,” Chirchir said.
Despite the setbacks, he said sections of the road, particularly between Rironi and Naivasha, are set to open to motorists before the festive season to ease congestion.
During the inspection, Chirchir witnessed the laying of the first layer of Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) at Lari, describing it as a major milestone for the project.
The development comes 11 months after construction was launched at Manguo, near Rironi, on November 28, 2025.
The expansion is intended to reduce congestion, shorten travel times and improve safety along the corridor connecting Nairobi to the Rift Valley, Western Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Accompanied by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General, Chirchir also assessed road safety measures, including whether road furniture and signage met the required standards.
He said more than 1,000 pieces of heavy-duty machinery had been deployed along the corridor and urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules and remain vigilant around active construction zones.
