Fao Shyshy Reveals Why Pedicures Make Her Uncomfortable

Social media personality Fao Shyshy has shared why getting a pedicure makes her intensely uncomfortable, saying that the experience often feels unbalanced and awkward, not because of the service itself, but because of the social dynamics that come with it.

In her Instagram Stories on Friday, December 12, 2025, Fao revealed that she struggles with the idea of relaxing while another person works on her feet, describing it as a moment that unintentionally reinforces a hierarchy between the client and the nail technician.

“Every time I’m getting a pedicure I feel like a human who is degrading another human, fr. No frrr, ’cause like who am I to be relaxing and scrolling on my phone while somebody is rubbing my feet?” she wrote.

She added that the seating arrangement in many nail salons contributes to the discomfort. Clients often sit elevated in large chairs while technicians work on lower stools or on the floor.

“It enforces the idea of superiority and inferiority. I hope you guys get what I mean. Especially when they’re older,” Fao noted.

Despite her discomfort, Fao made it clear that her feelings stem from empathy rather than criticism of the profession.

She urged people to humanise nail technicians, greet them warmly, ask how they’re doing, and always leave a generous tip.

“This is a service and people forget to treat them nicely. That’s why I make sure I have full-blown conversations with anyone who takes the time out of their day to take care of me & leave tips because I just wouldn’t feel right,” she said.

“The concept of someone kneeling down and touching my feet feels mean, idk, but I gotta get my toes done. I’m gonna figure out how to do it alone ’cause I feel so bad.”

Pedicures have become an essential part of personal grooming, wellness, and self-care, enjoyed by people across different ages and lifestyles.

Urban centres like Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru host a growing number of modern nail salons and spas that offer high-quality pedicure services, blending global beauty trends with local expertise.

In many neighbourhoods, pedicures are also offered at more affordable community salons, making them accessible to a wide range of people.
