Emily MoKogoti: Meet Nyamira Mum of 3 who has Ventured into Boda Boda Business to Provide for Family, “I Never Gave Up”

A hardworking woman from Nyamira county has shared how she got into the boda boda (motorbike) business. Mother of three, Emily Mokogoti does boda boda business to make ends meet. Emily Mokogoti told TSM that she has been working as a boda boda rider for the past three years. Why Emily Mokogoti ventured into the boda boda business The 37-year-old mother of three explained that she joined the male-dominated industry in 2022 out of a strong desire to provide for her family.. She noted that life was tough at the time, as she faced financial hardships and struggled to make ends meet. Determined to find a solution, Mokogoti decided to learn how to ride a motorbike with the help of a friend. "I am a risk-taker. Life was tough, and I felt I needed to try something new. A friend agreed to teach me how to ride, and though I fell many times and had to pay for damages, I never gave up," she recalled. How much does a boda boda rider make in a day? The determined woman revealed that she earns between KSh 800 and KSh 1,200 per day, ferrying passengers, delivering parcels, and even carrying heavy luggage. She also explained that over the past three years, she has built a loyal clientele, mostly women, who feel safer riding with her. "This job helps me pay school fees for my children, rent, and put food on the table," she proudly stated. Mokogoti shared that she hopes to inspire other women to take risks and explore opportunities, no matter how unconventional they may seem.
