Drake is suing Universal Music Group (UMG) alleging misconduct in the promotion of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, “Not Like Us.”
In his legal filing, Drake claims that Universal Music Group (UMG) and Spotify manipulated the system by using bots, questionable payments and platform tactics to artificially boost the streams of Kendrick Lamar’s diss track and damage his reputation.
“This isn’t just a rap feud. It’s a legal drama involving bots, payola, and corporate sabotage,” he said.
Drake’s team alleges that UMG paid Apple to have Siri redirect fans searching for his album Certified Lover Boy to Kendrick Lamar’s diss track, which includes the provocative line, “Certified Lover Boy?/ Certified pedophile.”
They also accuse Spotify of recommending the diss track to users searching for unrelated artists, calling it an “illegal scheme” to tilt the scales in Kendrick’s favor.
The lawsuit further claims that UMG orchestrated an extensive campaign to boost the diss track, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts earlier this year.
However, UMG has since dismissed these claims, terming them as “absurd” and highlighting their commitment to ethical marketing practices.
UMG stated, “The claim that UMG would do anything to undermine any of its artists is offensive and untrue. No amount of fabricated and unreasonable legal arguments in this pre-action submission can hide the fact that fans choose the music they want to listen to.”
