The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has issued a detailed update on investigations into the fatal road accident that claimed the life of former minister and Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, announcing that the driver of the Climax Company Ltd bus involved has been re-summoned for further police action.

In a statement dated December 16, 2025, the DCI said preliminary investigations established that the accident indeed occurred on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway amid speculations on social media that the scene might have been tampered with. 

According to the detectives, despite having been interrogated to aid the investigations, the driver, identified as Tyrus Githinji Kamau, will be required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, just three days before Christmas. 

The driver, according to police, was released on cash bail and is facing charges of dangerous driving contrary to the law. 

''Tyrus is out on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. He is required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on 22nd December 2025 for further police action,'' DCI said.

Additionally, detectives have interviewed the petrol station's night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom have provided their personal accounts of the events that occurred on the fateful night.

Following the incident, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to the scene, where they conducted preliminary examinations and secured key exhibits. 

As part of the scene documentation, detectives recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, which has already undergone initial review and analysis.

The footage shows Jirongo driving into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction at 2:18:40am, though not to refuel. At 2:19:10am, he stopped at the station exit, and at 2:19:19am, he made a right turn to head back towards Nairobi. At 2:19:25am, the CCTV captured a PSV bus ramming into his vehicle.

The crash involved Jirongo’s motor vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, and a public service vehicle bus, registration number KCU 576A, owned by Climax Company Ltd. 

The collision occurred at about 2:19am and resulted in a head-on impact that pushed Jirongo’s vehicle approximately 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to a stop about 50 metres away.

Detectives are also examining Jirongo’s movements before the crash, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with earlier that night, notably those present at a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

The detectives added that further analysis of the CCTV footage is underway, and additional statements are expected from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses. 

Meanwhile, DCI noted that once investigations are complete, a comprehensive file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for perusal and advice.
