Welcoming a healthy baby is a huge blessing, but navigating the journey into parenthood—especially for first-time parents—can be challenging.
This sentiment was recently shared by budding gospel artist and content creator Ben Cyco and his wife, brand influencer and podcast co-host Wanjiru Njiru.
In their latest episode of the Joy Ride podcast, the couple opened up about the changes they have experienced since welcoming their son two months ago.
They candidly discussed how the new arrival has strained their relationship, making them feel more like roommates than a couple despite being married for three years.
"I think the drives we’ve been taking have allowed us to connect... although Tawa is always there, I feel like the drives have really helped us," Wanjiru noted during the conversation.
Before she could finish her thought, Ben added playfully, "But you have to sit with him in the back while I'm just up front like an Uber driver, switching between reggae playlists and adjusting the volume and the AC," which made them both laugh.
Overcome with emotion, Wanjiru softly said to Ben, "I think... I just miss you," highlighting the toll that juggling parenthood and their individual jobs has taken on them, especially after spending years without company.
Ben echoed his wife's feelings, expressing, "I hope it gets better, you know... I hope it allows us more time to just go back to being us."
Wanjiru suggested the possibility of rekindling their romance by going out on dates without their toddler now that their little boy is getting older and they are slowly re-entering the outside world.
"Are you going to be able to concentrate on my poems?" Ben asked, amused by his wife's proposal, given how attached they are to baby T.
In response, Wanjiru likened Ben to a helicopter parent. "I mean, I don’t check the CCTV that much. I don’t think checking once every 15 minutes is excessive," she said, owning up to the playful accusation as they both laughed.
In a previous episode, Ben shared how fatherhood has changed him, noting that babies are more than the adorable moments seen online.
"You lied to me—those babies look very cute on Instagram and when you’re holding them. But then they wake up at 2 or 4 AM, and you have to figure out why they’re crying. I’ve heard people say by the fifth child you’ll adapt; if you want things to be easier, just pop them out quicker. With the second one, we’ll still be warming up," he joked.
Wanjiru added, "It’s been very demanding. My coach warned me I would be tested by this, but I didn’t fully understand. Motherhood has shown me how imbalanced the equation really is."
