Absa Opens 87th Branch in Kawangware to Boost Banking Access in Nairobi's Outskirts

Absa Bank Kenya has opened a new branch in Kawangware, a densely populated suburb of Nairobi, as part of its strategy to expand banking access to underserved urban communities and support local economic activity.

The new outlet, located at Soko Safi Mall, becomes the bank’s 87th branch nationwide and is designed to serve individuals, small businesses, and informal sector groups with full-service banking, 24/7 ATM and cash deposit facilities, and links to Absa’s broader agency and mobile banking network.

Absa Kenya CEO Abdi Mohamed said the expansion aligns with the bank’s broader financial inclusion agenda, aimed at supporting high-potential but underbanked areas.

“Kawangware is home to thousands of hardworking families and entrepreneurs. This branch offers access to banking tools that can help grow their incomes and improve financial resilience,” said Mohamed.

The move is part of Absa’s ongoing efforts to expand into high-growth urban zones that contribute significantly to Kenya’s informal economy. In Kawangware, a bustling hub of trade and small enterprise, the new branch is expected to play a key role in increasing access to credit, savings, and insurance products.

Moses Muthui, Director of Consumer Banking at Absa Kenya, said the bank is responding to the need for proximity and relevance in financial services.

“By placing branches within reach, we’re supporting communities to make better financial decisions—whether that’s saving collectively, accessing micro-loans, or insuring their families and businesses,” he said.

Absa’s presence in Kawangware adds to a growing network of bank branches serving Nairobi’s peri-urban centres, reflecting increased competition among lenders to tap into informal and small business markets.
