Opposition and Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party leader Raila Odinga now says that holding demonstrations to protest the high cost of living is not a priority.

In a recent interview with a local media station, Raila said despite calls for street demonstrations, they have chosen a different path for the time being, noting that a time for such talks will come.

He also noted that those who were formerly against demonstrations are now urging him to mobilise people and lead demonstrations in the streets.

"People are asking me to ask people to come out on the streets. Those who were saying demonstrations were destroying their businesses are now they are asking me to ask people to come out. Other people are saying no, don’t ask them to come out, Baba keep quiet. We talk when it’s necessary and times are going to come; right now we are following a different path," Raila noted.

He also dismissed claims that the opposition has been slacking and not speaking against the economic injustices the country faces.

"It is incorrect to say that the opposition has been quiet; we have talked about the oil scandal and corruption in the country; we have been talking about the cost of living every single day," Raila said.

While addressing the state of the country, the opposition leader expressed a sense of betrayal noting that some of the demands made during the National Dialogue were met with resistance and arrogance from the Kenya Kwanza government.

“We had hoped that we would be able to make certain changes and reforms, and we made some demands that were met by arrogance and resistance. This is the year following controversial elections, and we wanted to put the elections behind us; the only way to do it was to look at what happened,” Raila said.
