Wajir MCAs engage in fist fights over the proposed 2024/2025 financial year budget

Drama and chaos erupted at the Wajir County Assembly on Tuesday when Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) clashed over the proposed budget for the 2024-2025 financial year.

The argument quickly escalated to a violent altercation, halting the proceedings as MCAs fought over the mace.

Some MCAs criticized the budget, claiming it contained numerous misplaced priorities

The chaos erupted when the mace was brought into the House to commence the session. Members of the County Assembly attacked the orderlies in an attempt to seize the mace.

The commotion escalated as the Sergeants-at-Arms wrestled to reclaim the mace from the MCAs, who outnumbered them. The situation nearly turned into a fistfight, with female MCAs clashing with each other.

The disagreement stemmed from a faction of MCAs arguing that the proposed budget failed to address the needs of the people of Wajir and contained many misplaced priorities.

“There is no time this budget is going to be discussed…we will scrutinize and see what is there. There is impunity and massive corruption in this county,” said an MCA.

They also accused the executive of interfering with the house's independence in executing its mandate.

“This house is independent…we can’t be misused…we can’t be intimidated,” he added.

Property damage was also witnessed, with chairs and tables broken in the ensuing pandemonium.
