Biography
Wafula Chebukati is a Kenyan lawyer and former chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Former president of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Chebukati to the position in 2017 for a six-year tenure.
After completing his term, he retired from the position on January 17, 2023.
Chebukati Early Life and Education
Wafula Chebukati hails from Bungoma county where he was born on December 22, 1961. Chebukati attended Lenana High School and later joined the University of Nairobi from whence he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
Additionally, he holds a master’s degree in business administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Furthermore, he is a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), the Institute of Certified Secretaries, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Career Life
He is a Kenya Lawyer with having interest in corporate governance. In 2006 he founded a law firm named Cootow and Associates Advocates that was based in Nairobi.
He once contested for the Saboti Constituency parliamentary seat in 2007 on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.
Moreover, in January 2017, he was nominated by the then Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to join the IEBC as the chair.
During his tenure, he oversaw three Kenyan elections: the 2017 Kenyan general election, the October 2017 repeat presidential election and the 2022 Kenyan general election.
Personal Life and Family
Chebukati tied the knot with his wife Mary Chebukati in 1990. The couple are blessed with three children, a girl and two boys.

According to the media reports, Chebukati’s Net Worth is approximated at Ksh.120 million as of 2022.
Moreover, while serving as IEBC chairman Chebukati he earned a monthly gross salary of Ksh924,000 which includes a salary market adjustment of Ksh169,600, according to the remuneration and benefits review for the financial year 2022/2023 by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Additionally, the IEBC chair was entitled to a house allowance of Ksh 200,000, a car loan of Ksh 10 million, airtime worth Ksh 20,000, and a mortgage of Ksh 40 million.
When factoring in other allowances, the IEBC chairperson’s monthly earnings rose to nearly Ksh 1.5 million, which translated to roughly Ksh 20 million annually.
Over a six-year term, this would total approximately Ksh 120 million. It is important to note that does not include his assets, which are not listed.
