Uhuru condemns alliance announced by Congolese Opposition leader Corneille Nangaa

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, serving as the Facilitator of the East African Community (EAC) led Nairobi Peace process, has denounced the controversial political-military alliance announced by Congolese opposition figure Corneille Nangaa.

In a statement issued on Monday, Kenyatta termed the alliance as an attempt to challenge the ‘’the legitimate political status quo in the DRC.”

“Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, the Facilitator of the East African Community (EAC) led Nairobi Peace process, watched with shock and dismay at the developments of last Friday, the 15th of December 2023 in Nairobi, where individuals claiming to be pursuing the interest of greater peace and stability in the DRC initiated yet another political and military Alliance to challenge the legitimate political status quo in the DRC,” said Kenyatta.

“The Facilitator repudiates these developments and in particular their military character, and the accompanying politically charged and provocative rhetoric.”

In a press briefing in Nairobi on Friday and which has sparked a diplomatic row between DRC and Kenya, Mr Nangaa, who has been in exile, announced the creation of a political-military alliance with the M23 rebels and other armed groups in order to "save the country".

The merger ceremony that happened in Nairobi, has seemingly rattled Kinshasa prompting the recall of the country's envoy.

Kenyatta reiterated his support for the United States-brokered ceasefire, which is seen as a critical step toward creating a conducive environment to facilitate the peace-building process, bringing an end to the “senseless killing and suffering of the people in the eastern DRC.”

The Nairobi peace process, spearheaded by the EAC and facilitated by President (Rtd) Kenyatta, has been a diplomatic initiative aimed at resolving conflicts and fostering stability in the Great Lakes region.

Kenyatta called for international cooperation and urged all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue over confrontation.
