Safaricom contributed Sh983 billion to the Kenyan economy and sustained over 1.28 million jobs in the last financial year, according to its 13th Sustainable Business Report.
The report, launched as the company transitions to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030, highlights Safaricom’s economic impact.
The firm generated Sh562.2 billion in economic value through its operations, while M-Pesa’s social value contribution amounted to Sh348 billion.
Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, stated that the company’s efforts have positively impacted over 8 million Kenyans through initiatives by the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations.
He also noted an increase in women’s representation in leadership roles, which now stands at 42.4 percent.
“Safaricom has navigated rapidly changing business and social environments by deploying sustainable business practices. Our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles will be anchored on technology as we transition to a TechCo by 2030,” said Ndegwa.
He emphasized that this shift will open new opportunities to enhance customer experience and maintain environmental stewardship.
Safaricom’s sustainability efforts, which began with the release of its first sustainability report in 2012, have seen the firm integrate 9 out of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into its business strategy. The integration has led to significant impact in community projects, climate action through tree planting, clean energy solutions, and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
Currently, 84 of Safaricom’s sites are solar-powered, and 1,052 grid-connected sites are powered by renewable energy sources.
In Ethiopia, the company has registered 4.5 million customers, with 38 percent of the population now connected.
