"Ruto Needs a Mental Evaluation": Ekuru Aukot on Ruto’s ‘Shoot the Legs’ Order

Thirdway Alliance Party leader Ekuru Aukot has suggested that President William Ruto undergoes a mental evaluation over remarks he made on anti-government protests.

Speaking on Thursday, July 10, Aukot expressed concerns over Ruto's choice of words during a recent rally in which he seemingly endorsed the use of force to quell demonstrations.

"President Ruto is losing it, and he needs to undergo a mental evaluation to determine whether he is okay, as some of the things he is saying as president are concerning," he said.

Aukot accused the government of manufacturing a narrative of a national crisis to justify harsh crackdowns on citizens.

"They are now sponsoring a false narrative that there’s a state of anarchy in Kenya, which is why they’re using dangerous phrases like 'enough is enough,' 'shoot to kill,' and 'shoot in the leg'," he added.

While speaking in Kilimani on Wednesday, July 9, Ruto directed security forces to shoot in the legs those involved in looting and destruction of property during protests.

Ruto said officers should not use lethal force against ordinary citizens but those who deliberately set out to destroy other people's livelihoods.

"Someone who goes to burn another person's business; someone who takes fire and goes to destroy another person’s livelihood should be shot in the legs, taken to the hospital, and then taken to court,” he said.

Ruto insisted that the intention is not to kill, but to disable and apprehend suspects to face legal consequences.

"They should not be killed, but their legs should be broken so they go to the hospital, and afterward they should be taken to court.

"Police should not shoot and kill ordinary citizens. But criminals, someone who has made it their mission to destroy another person’s business, should be dealt with," he added.
