Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly criticised the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for allegedly using agents to track his movements.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 19, 2024, Gachagua claimed that an NIS officer followed him from Nairobi to Makueni County during a recent visit to Kalawa Ward in Mbooni Constituency.
Gachagua shared photos of the vehicle and the person allegedly involved in the surveillance, expressing concern about the misuse of public resources.
He urged the NIS to allocate its personnel and assets more effectively in order to strengthen national security.
"National Intelligence Service, please deploy this vehicle and this officer to do some useful work to enhance our security as a nation," Gachagua stated.
"It was pointless to waste fuel and man-hours having him follow us all the way from Nairobi to Makueni yesterday."
This is not the first time Gachagua has publicly criticised the NIS.
In October 2024, he defended his public condemnation of NIS Director General Noordin Haji, claiming that his criticisms were consistent with holding public officials accountable.
Gachagua emphasised that such scrutiny is essential for ensuring the effectiveness of national security agencies.
Furthermore, in June 2024, Gachagua demanded Haji's resignation, accusing him of failing to provide adequate intelligence that could have prevented widespread unrest following the proposed Finance Bill 2024.
He claimed that the NIS' shortcomings contributed to the chaos and loss of life during the protests.
