Revealed: Uhuru and Gachagua to Work Together Ahead of By-Election

Like former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's DCP, former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party will back a joint opposition candidate in the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election on November 27.

This announcement was made by Pauline Njoroge, Jubilee’s Deputy Organising Secretary, after Gachagua revealed that his DCP would not be fielding a candidate in the by-election, but would instead be supporting the joint opposition candidate, whom Gachagua claimed was the Democratic Party’s candidate, Newton Karish.

“The Jubilee Party will not be fielding a candidate in this race. Instead, we will support the joint opposition candidate,” she said.

At the same time, Njoroge dismissed reports that the party's National Executive Council (NEC) had issued nomination papers to an unknown candidate.

“As the Deputy Organizing Secretary of the Jubilee Party, I wish to clarify. The National Executive Council (NEC), chaired by H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, has not issued nomination papers to any aspirant for the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election,” she stated on Friday, September 12.

On Wednesday, September 10, Gachagua’s DCP announced it had withdrawn from three upcoming by-elections, including Mbeere North, instead opting to support aspirants from allied opposition parties.

The move was announced after a high-level National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Nairobi, with Gachagua stating the decision aligned with the party's dedication to opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

In supporting the Democratic Party (DP) in the Mbeere North by-election, Gachagua acknowledged that the seat was previously held by the party.

Similarly, DCP pledged to support the Wiper candidate in the Muumbuni Ward by-election. Finally, the party pledged to support a DAP-K candidate in the Kabuchai/Chwele Ward in Bungoma County.

This decision led to the party’s candidate for the seat, Duncan Mbui, abandoning the party and choosing to run under Moses Kuria’s Chama cha Kazi party.

The Mbeere North seat became vacant after incumbent Geoffrey Ruku, elected on a DP ticket, was appointed as the Public Service Cabinet Secretary by President William Ruto.

The race for the Mbeere North seat will include Karish, Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Leonard Muriuki, and Mbui.
