Raila Odinga opposes forceful evacuation of residents in high risk flood areas without a proper resettlement plan

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has intensified his criticism of President William Ruto's administration over its response to the ongoing heavy rains that have caused havoc countrywide.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition party leader now wants the flood crisis affecting various counties declared a national disaster, while at the same time opposing the forceful evacuation of residents from areas mapped as high risk until there is a proper resettlement plan.

While visiting flood victims at Mukuru slums in Nairobi on Friday, Mr. Odinga faulted the government's response to the ongoing torrential rains that have led to the loss of lives and displaced thousands.

“Si wameshindwa...hata wakipewa miaka 10 si watashindwa...mawaziri hawana ujuzi wowote wa kuendeleza serikali,” he said.

Wiper party boss Kalonzo Musyoka added: “Tumefikia kwa mkasa huu kwa sababu ya ukosefu wa matayarisho.”

Mr. Odinga went ahead to slam President Ruto's directive of evacuating residents living around flood prone areas without a proper resettlement plan.

“Tumesema wasijaribu kubomoa manyumba na kuhamisha watu. Watu wapewe makazi kwanza kabla hawajafanya ubomoaji...wananchi sio wanyama,” he stated.

“You cannot receive adequate aid to assist the victims unless you declare the crisis a disaster.”

Kalonzo chimed in: “Serikali inaambia watu wahame...wahame waende Ngong Hills?”
