Raila Odinga Demands Justice After Albert Ojwang's Death in Police Custody

Raila Odinga Demands Justice After Albert Ojwang's Death in Police Custody

ODM leader Raila Odinga has broken his silence over the death of X influencer Albert Ojwang with demands on the government.

In a statement on Tuesday, June 10, Raila expressed concern over the growing list of young Kenyans who have lost their lives in unclear circumstances.

Ojwang was confirmed dead on Sunday, June 8, just hours after he was picked from his native home in Homa Bay County, and locked up at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

His death has sparked nationwide outrage, with police coming under fire, particularly because of the inconsistencies in their accounts of how Ojwang died.

Raila condemned the killing, as he demanded a speedy conclusion to investigations into the death of Ojwang, which was shrouded in mystery up until Tuesday.

"When citizens can no longer tell the difference between the two forms of injustice - police injustice and mob injustice - we are staring at the reality of failure as a nation," the former Prime Minister added.

"A speedy and credible closure to this latest incident of injustice in the hands of the police, alongside the many others that we have been pursuing since 2023, is not optional."

Raila joined a growing list of leaders, both in government and in opposition, who are applying pressure on security agencies over Ojwang's death. Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi, a known defender of the Kenya Kwanza government, admitted the late influencer's death left him 'speechless'.

Former Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi on Tuesday also demanded that the police be held accountable for the death of Ojwang, who also worked as a teacher before his demise.

Meanwhile, for a better part of Tuesday, there was anxiety around the case involving Ojwang, after the extended delay of the post-mortem.

When the pathology report finally came out, it was confirmed that the late Ojwang died from head injuries, neck compression and multiple soft tissue trauma. Pathologists also ruled out self-inflicted wounds, as initially suggested by the National Police Service on Sunday, June 8.

The pathologist further revealed that specimens have been gathered and sent to other investigative agencies to gather more evidence to help in corroborating the initial pathologist's report.
