President Ruto mourns the death of former Tanzanian Prime minister Edward Lowassa

In a condolence message on Sunday, Ruto termed the former prime minister a respected and progressive leader who worked for the greater good of the people of Tanzania and the East African Region.

"Prime Minister Edward Lowassa was a respected and progressive leader who worked for the greater good of the people of Tanzania and the East African Region. We honour the distinguished life that he led, his work and the rich legacy that he leaves behind. May God grant the family, President Samia Suluhu and the people of The United Republic of Tanzania strength at this moment of grief," Ruto stated

 The 70-year-old died on Saturday, February 10, 2024, while undergoing treatment at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) in Dar es Salaam.

According to Tanzanian Vice President Philip Mpango, Lowassa was suffering from a myriad of conditions including lung issues, stomach ulcers, and hypertension.

“The former prime minister started to receive treatment at the JKCI on January 14, 2022. He was later referred to a South African hospital for specialised treatment and later returned to JKCI," he said as quoted by the Citizen.

Lowassa served as Prime Minister from 2005 to 2008 under President Jakaya Kikwete.
