President William Ruto on Sunday left the country to attend the inauguration of Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame. 

Ruto will be joining other Heads of State in Kigali, to witness Kagame assume his fourth term in office. 

Other Heads of State that have reportedly jetted in Kigali include; Salva Kiir (South Sudan), Umaro Sissoco (Guinea Bissau), Emmerson Mnangagwa (Zimbabwe), Ousmane Sonko (Senegal PM), Oligui Nguema (Gabon), Nana Akufo-Addo (Ghana), Faustin-Archange Touadéra (Central African Republic) and Faure Gnassingbé (Togo).

23 African leaders are expected to attend the swearing in of Kagame, who was declared President after victory Rwanda’s July 15, 2024 polls. 

De facto leader since the end of the 1994 genocide and president since 2000, Kagame scored 99.15 per cent of the vote counted by the National Election Commission.

The foreign trip by President Ruto follows a 2-month long hiatus for the Kenyan leader, who has for a while only maintained local tours.

After attending the inaugural Korea-Africa summit in June 4, 2024, the Head of State became ‘grounded’ at home after an uprising that led to widespread protests in the country.

The youth-led protests which began in June 18, have since continued to destabilize the Kenya Kwanza government.

What began as a call to abandon the unpopular Finance Bill 2024, saw Ruto dismiss his entire Cabinet and build a new one.
