President Ruto Awards Charter To Kenya's First Virtual University

President William Ruto has officially opened the Open University of Kenya located in Konza City, Machakos County.

The Head of State awarded a Charter to the higher learning institution on Thursday, where Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi was appointed Chancellor.

Speaking at the launch, Ruto termed the University as one that will serve the ordinary people, and enable mama mbogamatatu drivers to access higher education.

“This is a bottom up institution, people who couldn't afford will now be able to afford and access education from anywhere,” he said.

OUK Chancellor Mwangi said the University shall optimize technology.

“Global challenges led us to put up this mode of learning, Covid 19 taught us, increase in demand for higher education, advances in IT provides efficient modes of teaching and learning,” he said.

The institution will offer distance learning, which allows students to learn at their own time and place.

It will offer courses in Science and Technology, Education, Economics and Business, and Agriculture.

The first cohort of students will begin learning in September.
