A recent TIFA National Survey shows that the majority of Kenyans are satisfied with how the government handled the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The survey, conducted between November 10 and 17, involved 2,053 randomly selected adults across all 47 counties. Results indicate strong public approval of state actions following Raila’s death.
According to the survey, 60% of respondents said they were very satisfied with the government’s response, while 29% were somewhat satisfied. Only 11% of Kenyans expressed dissatisfaction with how the situation was handled.
“Kenyans’ back state response to Raila’s passing,” the survey summary reads, showing broad support.
The survey shows that most citizens support the government’s approach to managing public mourning and official ceremonies.
Public sentiment focused on general approval of the government’s actions. TIFA explains that criticism, where it exists, centres on crowd management issues and perceptions of insincerity rather than the decision to honour Raila.

Respondents generally appreciated the way state protocols were observed and the respect shown during the mourning period.
“Public sentiment leaned strongly toward approval,” TIFA notes, reflecting widespread agreement with official decisions.
Officials say the findings demonstrate trust in the state’s ability to manage sensitive national matters. The high satisfaction levels suggest that Kenyans felt included and respected throughout the mourning process.
The late Raila Odinga received an emotional send-off at his state funeral in October 2025. Tens of thousands of people, many carrying branches as a traditional symbol of grief and wearing T-shirts printed with his image, wept and sang at the service at Nyayo National Stadium, paying their final respects.
President William Ruto attended the ceremony, alongside heads of parliament and the judiciary. Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was among the African dignitaries present.
