Liquor suspected to be laced with poisonous chemicals was seized on Wednesday, February 27, when the Embu security team raided an agricultural chemical shop in the region’s Kianjokoma town.
During the raid, a man found locked in the same shop was arrested and taken to the local police station for questioning.
The team, led by County Commissioner Jack Obuor, made a surprise raid on the shop and found 1,400 crates of the liquor, suspected to be unfit for human consumption.
“We received a tip-off from the public, and when we went to the shop, we found the liquor packaged in bottles. We also found a young man and picked him up for questioning,” Mr. Obuor said.
He said the liquor had been hidden there for sale to unsuspecting residents in the area.
“We suspect that this liquor is bad because it has been stored in the wrong place and no one has come to claim it, and the owner of the shop has not been found either,” said Mr Obuor.
He said liquor samples would be taken to the Government Chemist in Nairobi for analysis.
He thanked the public for cooperating with the security team in the fight against illicit brews being sold in the area.
“The public is helping us, and we will win this war,” said Mr Obuor.
Mr Obuor said the government’s directive that illicit liquor destroys people’s lives and retards development must be implemented.
“The operation will continue until we rid the area of all poisonous liquor,” Mr Obuor said.
