Moi University is being ridiculed online after they shared a rather embarrassing tweet of a gate-launching ceremony at the campus' premises.

While taking to their official X (formerly Twitter) account, the higher education institution shared photos of what appeared to be staff members gathered around the school gate, saying that the new gate was being 'handed over' officially by the contractor.

"Happening NOW…Official Handing Over of The University Gate by the Contractor Today, Monday 11th December 2023..." read the tweet.

Kenyans who came across the post couldn't help but deride the campus for even having the audacity to hold such a seemingly senseless ceremony, with many blasting the institution for the audacious display of tomfoolery.

Many called out the school for engaging in such trivial endeavors instead of tackling much more important and scholarly matters associated with a national university.

One unimpressed user said, "Shame on all of you for lining up to launch a gate at an academic institution. You should be launching research projects!"

Another one added, "Not sure where this culture came from. Serious universities are investing in research and world-class labs. Not world-class gates!"

On his part, a thoroughly displeased Victor Kipng'etich wrote, "University Council, Proffesors, Doctors, Choir, gate opening committee kufungua gate! Then during audit you write one million. All these people lining up to open a gate that has been built for ten years, you should all be ashamed of yourselves!

"Your brothers in Nyeri are testing an automatic medical Image Diagnosis approach for lung diseases using deep transfer learning and you're testing if the gate hinges work??" he posted.

Late November, Moi University was back in the news after area locals publicly apologized to the former Vice Chancellor, Laban Ayiro over his discourteous ouster from office.

In the video circulating on social media, community leader Richard Tarus was seen acknowledging Ayiro as the most effective leader Moi University had witnessed.

Offering a formal apology on behalf of the locals, Tarus expressed regret for not recognizing his merits during his tenure.

“I want to apologize on behalf of the locals to Laban Ayiro. He was the right person to be elected as Moi University’s Vice-Chancellor. We ask for forgiveness without any fear,” said Tarus.
