Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja reveals NMS left behind KSH 16 billion in pending bills and incomplete projects

The Nairobi Metropolitan Services left a ksh.16 billion hole in the Nairobi County Government's accounts due to pending bills and numerous incomplete projects.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja revealed this while appearing before the committee to answer audit questions for the fiscal year 2021/2022.

The governor stated that, despite the county government of Nairobi remitting over 27 billion shillings to NMS during its tenure, the Major General Badi-led NMS outfit left behind a pending bill that is still being scrutinised.

Members present suggested that the NMS management team be summoned to answer several additional audit questions raised by the auditors general.

Governor Sakaja insisted that the county government of Nairobi will not pay legal pending bills totaling kshs. 10 billion. The city chief stated that some of the claims that have been pending for years are questionable, and that paying them would halt critical services provided by the county.

To address the situation, Sakaja proposed forming a task force to investigate the payments, but a court in Trans nzoia ruled that such an action was illegal.

To avoid a similar situation in the future, Sakaja suggests that the county government hire internal lawyers and place them on retainer.
