Muhoho Kenyatta set for Cabinet: May be Ruto's DP in 2027

The Star Kenya reports that In a significant political move, President William Ruto is considering key Cabinet appointments which may bring on board Muhoho Kenyatta, the younger brother of retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, former CS Mutahi Kagwe and former Interior PS Karanja Kibicho.

Sources close to the Kenyatta family confided to the Star that the discussions form part of a deal struck during Ruto’s Monday visit to Uhuru at his Ichaweri home in Gatundu South constituency.

Ruto called on his predecessor with official communication from both sides saying they engaged in discussions about pressing “national and regional issues”.

In a statement released by State House, the leaders emphasised the importance of achieving a broader political consensus to foster inclusive growth and progress.

In a follow-up statement yesterday, Ruto said the future of the country hinges on inclusivity, urging every citizen to play a role in shaping the nation’s trajectory.

“I thanked him for his continued role as a national statesman and for peace making in the region,” Ruto said.

As the political landscape evolves, insiders reveal the two leaders also strategised on the 2027 elections.

The discourse included shifting political dynamics in Mt Kenya, particularly increasing influence of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

To counter Gachagua’s growing influence and reclaim part of Kikuyu vote, the two leaders agreed on potential Cabinet appointments of Muhoho, Kagwe, Kibicho and Ndiritu Muriithi – former Laikipia governor and nephew of former President Mwai Kibaki.

The broader strategy appears to be aimed at grooming Muhoho for a more significant political role ahead of the 2027 elections, with discussions hinting at the possibility of him becoming Ruto’s running mate.

Observers have drawn parallels to Uhuru’s political trajectory, which saw him similarly groomed by former President Daniel arap Moi before ascending to the presidency.

The anticipated Cabinet reshuffle is not limited to the aforementioned individuals.

Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, currently serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff responsible for performance and delivery management at the Office of the President, is also being considered for a return to the Cabinet due to his proven track record and ability to communicate government policies effectively.

Other potential candidates include Belgut MP Nelson Koech and current Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira.

The impending reshuffle also aims to create new ministries focused on gender and culture within the ministries of Public Service and Tourism.

In the reshuffle, Roads and Transport CS Davis Chirchir is expected to move to the Ministry of Interior, a docket formerly held by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The DP has been instrumental in facilitating discussions between Ruto and Uhuru, further emphasising the collaborative spirit from their recent meetings.

Muhoho’s entry into the political arena marks an intriguing twist in the unfolding alliances.

A seasoned businessman, Muhoho operated behind the scenes during his brother’s decade-long presidency.

His contributions included leading legal research efforts during Uhuru’s challenges at the International Criminal Court as well as playing a pivotal role in the formation and branding of the National Alliance party.

Known for his ability to navigate complex political landscapes, Muhoho was reportedly involved in the landmark handshake between Uhuru and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

The handshake sought to foster unity and healing after a divisive election cycle.

Despite his significant contributions, those close to Muhoho describe him as one who prefers a quieter, boardroom-style leadership.

He is known for being handson in operations, demonstrating a dedication that resonates with his colleagues.

A father of three—two daughters and a son—he maintains a close relationship with Uhuru, which further solidifies his standing within the family and political circles.

Muhoho graduated with a degree in economics and political science from Williams College in Massachusetts, US.

His passion for agriculture saw him transform family farms into corporate entities.

In 1993, he co-founded Brookside Dairies, which has since grown into Kenya’s leading milk and dairy product supplier, surpassing the Kenya Cooperative Creameries and acquiring several other dairy brands.

Beyond Brookside, Muhoho is also responsible for the family’s interests in NCBA Bank, reflecting the Kenyatta family’s expansive business portfolio.

He is known as ‘MK’ among close friends and ‘chairman’ to employees.

As discussions around Cabinet appointments intensify, the political implications of these choices cannot be overstated.

The potential appointments of Muhoho, Kagwe and Kibicho signify a strategic move by Ruto to consolidate power and ensure that the government reflects a broader spectrum of voices, particularly from the influential Kikuyu community.
