MPs are seeking to allocate themselves an additional Ksh.13 billion into the NG-CDF kitty in disregard to the financial crunch in the country.
The National Assembly's Budget and Appropriation Committee is in possession of proposed amendments to the NG-CDF Act that would see MPs get more funds in the kitty.
The amendments by Wajir East lawmaker Aden Daud seek to amend Section 4 of the NG-CDF Act 2015 to enhance the allocation to the NG-CDF.
The proposed amendments, other than funding school bursaries and school infrastructure, seek to bring in new projects for funding by the kitty that includes the Sports, Arts and Social Development Fund and Universal Service Fund.
The bill further proposes to enhance the mandate of the NG-CDF by introducing development projects such as the construction and provision of communication equipment including masts and voice connectivity to be allocated not exceeding 5 per cent of the total allocation to the constituency in any financial year.
The current allocations to the kitty stand at Ksh.53.5 billion with the new amendments set to increase that allocation by an additional Ksh.13.2 billion.
The Budget and Appropriation Committee chair in the National Assembly Ndindi Nyoro noted that the NG-CDF remains pivotal and efficient to the 290 constituencies but the new amendments will go through all the stages since they have already concluded the 2024-2025 budget.
Nyoro says the bill has a financial implication and the committee must first seek an audience with the national treasury on the availability of resources and if the new changes will be sustainable.
