Ministry of Health issues warning to the public after a truck ferrying sodium cyanide overturned in Kiambu

The Ministry of Health has announced that a truck believed to have been transporting sodium cyanide overturned at Kambembe area in Rironi, Kiambu County.

Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, in a statement to newsrooms, said the incident caused a spillage of the highly toxic substance in the area.

“The Ministry advises the public to avoid the site of the incident and to cooperate with our emergency and disaster response teams as they work to contain the situation,” noted the PS.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to ensuring public safety and managing the risks associated with hazardous substances. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.”

The PS went ahead to note some of the dangers of sodium cyanide, noting that it is extremely toxic, and that ingesting or inhaling even small amounts is potentially fatal.

“Sodium cyanide poses a significant threat to aquatic life. Accidental release into waterways can cause extensive fish kills and long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems,” added PS Muthoni.

“Protective Measures Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection is essential when handling sodium cyanide to prevent direct exposure. Adequate ventilation and spill containment systems are crucial in environments where sodium cyanide is handled/present.”
