Exhilarating action is expected at the Nyayo National Stadium – Nairobi this weekend, as Kenya’s athletics world beaters go neck-to-neck in hunt for Paris Olympic tickets.
Competition Director Kennedy Tanui says it’s all systems go, with several global stars confirmed for the national trials.
Tanui described the two-day event as a "mini-Olympics," promising a non-stop action across track and field events.
“Clear your diary for the two days of the Mini-Olympics,” said Tanui, inviting Kenyans to come and enjoy the athletics fiesta which could probably show just what to expect at the Paris Olympics in most of the races.
Among the over 250 high-profile athletes competing are Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon, world champion Mary Moraa and 10,000m world record holder Beatrice Chebet.
"The selection of Team Kenya is a process. We've already selected the marathon team, and today, Athletics Kenya will name the 10,000m teams that participated in trials at the Prefontaine Classic," he added
Tanui explained that according to the Athletics Kenya (AK) constitution, the top two athletes in each event will be selected automatically, with the remaining athletes chosen by a panel of selectors.
"In the event that an athlete finishes in the top two but has not qualified by entry standard, they will be put on standby until the qualifying window closes on June 30, 2024,"
"However, all athletes must meet the stringent conditions outlined by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Athletics for qualification," Tanui stated.
Tanui urged fans to come and support the athletes, highlighting that the fiercely contested event at Nyayo Stadium will be free to attend, providing a chance to watch the crème de la crème of athletics.
Athletics at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is scheduled to be held from August 1 to August 11.
