Migori: Police officer shoots himself in the presence of his wife and kids

Police in Migori County have launched an investigation into the death of their colleague attached to Suna West Sub County.

Nyatike sub county police commander Dorothy Migarusha said the deceased, identified as Gipson Omari shot himself on Sunday morning in the presence of his wife and children.

Migarusha said the 31-year-old, who shot himself in the chest, was rushed to Life Care hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

Before shooting himself dead, the sub county police commander said, the deceased had been doing a night patrol together with another police officer.

She said the officer excused himself at around 3.30am to rush to his house to attend to some issues.

Migarusha said the other police officer who was doing the night patrol with the deceased heard a gunshot a few minutes later and he rushed to Omari’s house only to find him bleeding on the chest.

She said other police officers responded and he was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.

Nyatike sub county police commander said their preliminary investigation has established that the deceased got a phone call from his wife who wanted him to buy electricity tokens.

Migarusha said the deceased’s wife indicated that Omari arrived in the house and before engaging her, he shot himself.

The body of the deceased has been moved to Migori level four hospital mortuary pending police investigations.
